In 2002, when I first time sold my profitable website, many of my friends surprised. They asked me that – “Vikki, How can anyone sell a website? After all a website is nothing. It’s just the virtual space on the web server. Than How can it be worth 5 figure?” Since 2002, I am a website seller.
Well, it was my first website sell ever and before that I had never buy or sell any kind of web property. Now, the question is that, is it really possible to sell a website? And if yes than how? Well, yes. It is possible to sell website. In fact, it is possible to sell anything in this world which is generating some kind of income. This is because anything which generates income is an Asset and you can buy and sell assets. Say for Example Stocks, Bonds, Real Estate, Businesses and Mutual Funds are the Assets. It is because they generate income.
Websites and blogs can also generate income and that’s why it is possible to sell your website or a blog. And well, yes what I like about the web properties is, even if they don’t generate any kind of income, you can still sell them for profits. It is because the content in the websites is still valuable. And it can be useful to a new buyer. It requires a human mind work to develop profitable websites and blogs. It requires hours and hours of mind labor work daily to create websites and blogs and this is the reason even if they are not generating any income, you can sell them for profits.
How to Sell a Website for Profit?
Let’s assume that you own a website and you work on it since last couple of years. You worked hard to create a valuable content on your website for years and it’s also generating around $ 500 every month for you. Now, you want to sell your website. This is because you are no longer interested in running that website or you want some change in your life or you want to cash out your years of hard work because you want to travel the world or the reason can be anything.
So now, it’s time to sell your years of hardwork to the new buyer. There are basically 2 methods to find a buyer or an Investor to sell your web property.
01) Find a Potential Buyer by yourself
02) List your Web property for Auction on Online Marketplaces for Web Properties
Find a Potential Buyer by Yourself
I personally try this method first and if I don’t get succeed in first method, I go for the second method. First of all see that in which Niche your website is? Say for example, you are running a weight loss blog. And you want to sell that blog. So who can be your potential buyer? Well, it can be your local area fitness club, some pharma company which is promoting it’s own weight loss product or may be some fitness trainer.
First of all take a paper and pencil and write down all of your possible buyers on it. After that gather the contact information about them and write down a successful sales letter and send them via e-mail. Many times, they will contact back to you, negotiate the price for your website and you are done.
Sell your Website on Online Marketplaces
Now, suppose what if you don’t have time to find a potential buyer? Well, in that case simply list your property for sale on online market places. I recommend two marketplaces to sell your websites.
01) Flippa.com
02) eBay Marketplace
I personally like Flippa.com over eBay. They will charge $ 19 to list a web property plus 5% of the final bid amount which is reasonable in my opinion. Simply list your web property over there and find out a potential buyer for your property. If your website is a big deal than prefer Escrow.com payment services for the smooth transaction of money.
Website Selling Tips
When you decide to sell your website, first of all gather all the information about your website. This is because a potential buyer may look for these statistics. Here are the things which you should collect before you plan to sell your website.

02) Alexa Traffic Rank
03) Google Analytics – Web Traffic Statistics
- Unique Daily Visitors (Past 3 months)
- Unique Page Views (Past 3 months)
- Visitors Demographics
- Map Overlay
- Keywords
04) Google AdSense Revenue Screenshots of past 3 months
05) Affiliate Income (Clickbank, Commission Junction) Stats of past 3 months
06) Any other Income stream
07) Yahoo and Google Backlinks Data
Once you have all of the above stats, it’s time to sell your website.
How much should be the Real Valuation of your Website?
This is the hardcore burning question. It is because the seller will always want to sell for higher price while a buyer will always ask for the lower price. Now, in that case what should be the real fair valuation of any web property? Well, according to international business standards, the fair valuation of any business is 3-5 times the annual revenue.
So if your website is generating annual $ 10,000 of revenue than it should be worth of $ 30,000-50,000. However, I had sold my 100 websites portfolio in Jan. 2010 for whooping US $ 3.5 Million which was 7 times the annual revenue of the entire portfolio. Well, yes my whole the website portfolio was making US $ 500,000 every year so it’s fair valuation should be US $ 1.5-2.5 Million.
Thus, sometimes it is quiet possible that the buyer is willing to pay much more than you think. This is because it is quiet possible that the buyer is very much interested in the website you own.
But well, yes. Consider your hours and hours of mind labor work before selling your valuable online asset. Don’t sell it for low price.

I started developing websites since 1997 and at that time, I did not have any idea that my websites can be worth of hundreds of thousands of dollars in just couple of years.
